Why we are different?
Whats the difference?
A lot of people ask me about the difference between a CrossFit Box and your average gym. I guess from the outside the box can seem an intimidating, chalk and sweat filled place dominated by genetic freaks like the men and women you see at the CrossFit Games.
The reality that this isn’t what most boxes are like. The majority of boxes in the UK are full of normal people trying very hard to get fitter, lose weight, look good naked, improve their 5k time, Deadlift 2x bodyweight. Or any other number of goals.
So what sets us apart from the competition when it comes to other gyms?
For me its the following:
Actual coaching. This is not just shouting at people or beasting them mindlessly. It is trying to slowly improve the way people move, giving them as much one to one time as is possible in a 12 person class. Knowing that each person ticks differently and so Client A might need some tough love whilst Client B needs some TLC. It means knowing the ins and outs of the Olympic lifts, Gymnastic movements, powerlifting movements and cyclical exercises. Essentially a jack of all trades. This takes time learning from other coaches, books etc and also spending time coaching itself.
All of this makes a huge difference to the members experience. They get a personal relationship with the coach and actually hopefully learn every time they come into the gym. Moving properly is incredibly important so that members get the full effect of the training we design and so that they can become more injury resistant.
We are not just a gym. We are somewhere that people come to see their friends and training buddies. This takes the tedium out of going to the gym that some feel and gives the member a reason to get up early or go after a long day at work. This is incredibly important.
The sense of kinship you feel with someone after you have all suffered through some grim conditioning piece is very hard to describe if it hasn’t been experienced, this brings all the members together. The amazing thing is that there is this atmosphere where everyone is accepted for who they are. If you struggle with a workout or find a certain skill difficult the community encourages and helps rather than leaves you to sink in a sea of despair on your own! Again this has to be seen or experienced to be believed, it is something truly special.
This spills over into social events and before you know it, that ‘guy at the gym’ is one of your best mates.
Here at LiftOff CrossFit there is nothing random or uncontrolled about the programming. It is carefully designed and periodised so that we go through certain phases building to testing weeks where we make sure that people are progressing as they should be. We ensure that movements and workouts are carefully designed to minimise injury risk and increase improvement potential. This is not very common in the industry unless you are a top end athlete.
All of the above might not be news to those of you that are regulars at LiftOff. For those of you that aren’t, come down and find out if I speak the truth for yourself. All you have to do is come down and take part. I guarantee you will not regret it.
For those that are coming reguarly, I am constantly surprised and blown away by the things you achieve day to day. Keep going, be consistent and patient and you’ll reach your goals.
