My Post Partum Story

My post partum story is one filled with mistakes and consequences but one that has lead me to a new and exciting mission. As a woman and mum working in the fitness industry, I have experienced the lack of support, education and guidance during post partum life. I experienced first hand the negative effects of pushing too hard in training and was following a very generalised fitness class. I was not listening to my body or nourishing myself in the right way. My body image and getting back to my pre-baby body became an obsession. Even when I started to see results, I simply started to train harder. I was also massively under-eating and not giving my body the self-care and attention it deserved.

My Post Partum Story – The Mistakes

I experienced two relatively traumatic labours with both my children. I felt I wasn’t provided with any after care support or education surrounding just what my body had been through. Getting back into exercise and training after the birth of my second daughter gave me a sense of mental relief from the pressures of coping with two children under two years old. It also changed my body in a way that I could never have imagined.

For a period of time I felt absolutely on top of the world. I had the most body confidence I had ever had, felt energised and alive through training. During this time I was eating around 1,000 calories a day, training 5 times a week whilst living on barely any sleep. I had not acknowledged in any way the trauma both physically and mentally that I had been through. I also thought it was a good idea to start a new business! This put me under further mental stress and my family under huge financial pressures.

My Post Partum Story – The Consequences

It has only been in the last 12 months that I have taken the time to reflect on this period of my life. After 4 years of neglecting my body and failing to invest in my own health, I experienced almost a year of complete burnout. I constantly experienced feelings of complete exhaustion, periods where I couldn’t bring myself to train along with a non existent immune system. Some days I felt like I had no “get up and go” for anything.

Why tell My Story?

What is the point of me telling ‘my story’? I want to convey the message that neglecting our bodies and failing to nourish ourselves in the right way can only be sustained for a period of time before something has to give. Physically and emotionally, we go through huge changes during pregnancy and labour. In my opinion, not enough guidance, education nor support is given to new mums. Quite often we feel absolutely fine in ourselves. We feel much like I did, that our bodies have bounced back and recovered with no issues at all. However, how do we really know what’s happening on the inside? We wait patiently (or not) during those nine months for our new bundle of joy to arrive. Why then do we feel the need to rush back to our pre-baby/pre-pregnant selves within just a matter of weeks?

The New Mission

As a result of all the mistakes I made during my post partum journey, I have a new mission! This is to educate and empower women to take the steps they need to heal their bodies in the right way after giving birth, however far along that path they may be. I truly believe that exercise can be hugely beneficial both mentally and physically for new mums. This must, however, be implemented in the correct way. Jumping back into a generalised fitness class or exercise programme will not the best thing for your body, regardless of how “easy” your labour or how good you feel post partum. For long term health and performance, in both daily life and in an active capacity, I am able to bring the following to new mums:

  • a wealth of knowledge, experience, support, wisdom and empathy;
  • a carefully structured post partum exercise programme designed firstly to regain strength and function in the core and, secondly, to build a strong foundation of strength to get back into training, exercise or whatever activities they love doing;
  • an insight into the importance of core and pelvic floor health; its structure, function and the role it plays as part of women’s overall health;
  • advice about long term pelvic floor health in order to avoid pelvic floor weakness and dysfunction;
  • nutritional support and advice to ensure that food and nourishment is supporting their new role as a mum;
  • the encouragement to ensure each mum is getting the time they need for self care and positive mental health.
